Community Service Award
Earl Jordan
The name Earl Jordan is synonymous with the sport of basketball in
the Greater Flint Area. He became a basketball enthusiast at a very
young age and has continued to promote the sport through the years
as participant, coach, organizer, and advocate.
Jordan, an AC-Delco Floor Inspector, holds an Associates Degree in
Applied Science and is 25 hours from obtaining a Bachelors Degree in
Elementary Education. He has served as Assistant Basketball Coach at
Mott Community College under former Coach John Gillian. He currently
serves as State Chairman of the Michigan Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)
and organized the first AAU Region V Basketball Tournament for the
Four-State Region consisting of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
Mr. Jordan is founder and President of the Michigan Basketball Association
(MBA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing the basketball
skills of youth and young adults. The MBA is a member of the NCAA and
USA Basketball.
Earl has organized and continues to operate the Vince Sikora Roundball
Classic (formerly the Roundball Basketball Classic) with Joel Ragland,
which is entering its 14th year. He participated in the Flint Parks
and Recreation Winter Basketball League as a player and coach for 20
years.
Jordan, 43, organized The Ron Slivka Holiday Tournament five years
ago and continues to operate it. He is Director of The National Pro-AM
Cities League for the State of Michigan, and he introduced The Summer
Pro-AM which has attracted such NBA players as Glen Rice, Isiah Thomas,
Steve Smith and Jeff Grayer. l
Jordan has also implemented college and high school division summer
leagues, as well as Class AA and Class A Recreational Leagues in the
Beecher School District under the auspices of the MBA.
