Fred Dent
Mr. Fred Dent (Pork Chops), expired on Sunday, February 25, 1990 (the
day of our Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Ceremony). He was born in Saint
Simon Island, Georgia and resided in Flint for 72 years.
Fred was well known for his efforts in urban renewal in the St. John
Street area of Flint. He was founder of the Flint Neighborhood Improvement
and Preservation Project, Inc. (NIPP).
Fred also served on the Flint Planning Commission, the Citywide Advisory
Committee to City Government and the Urban League. He was chairperson
of the Flint NIPP Board of Directors since its founding in 1976.
Fred retired from General Motors, where he served as an official of
the United Auto Workers.
He was an announcer for the Pioneers, Yellow Dogs, North Michigan,
M and S Orange, and Joe Louis Punchers Softball Teams in the early
1930's, as well as their traveling secretary. Fred was the first chairperson
of the Greater Flint Afro-American Hall of Fame Honorable Mention Committee.
The accomplishments and contributions that Fred Dent made on behalf
of others are indeed inspiring and had earned him the respect and admiration
of the Flint community.
