1987 Athletic and Scholastic Achievement Recipients


Jacqueline Barnes - Student Achievement

Jacqueline Barnes attends Southwestern High School, where as a senior she carries a 3.06 grade point average.

Athletic Achievement: Has participated in basketball, volleyball, softball and track. Basketball: Honorable mention All-Valley sophomore and junior year. Honorable mention All-State (both in the A.P. and Detroit Free Press). Leading scorer and rebounder-junior and senior year. Captain- 1986 basketball team. All City and second team. All Valley (leading vote-getter). Senior year CANUSA Basketball-1986. Nominated as Athlete of the Month at the Flint Exchange Club.

Scholastic Achievement: Received certificates and plaques for citizenship and leadership. Chosen as a U.S. Achievement Academy Winner-1984. Optimist Club Award Winner- 1986. Taking accounting, advanced computers, typing, trigonometry and advanced composition. Omega Chapter "FASHIONETI A"- 1986.

Extra Curricular Activities: Member of church youth group, assistant secretary, attended two national youth conferences-St. Louis and Maryland. Sings in church choir, participates on church softball team. Member of 4H Club. Member of NAACP. Also finds time to sew, sing, cook, and read mystery novels.

Other Information:Jacqueline's short term goal is to become a Legal Secretary and later a full time accountant. She plans to attend college while playing sports and pursuing a masters degree in business. Someday she would like to open her own accounting agency. She says "I feel that being elected on the Greater Flint Afro-American Hall of Fame would be one of the greatest things that could ever happen to a young black lady, who is as enthusiastic about black achievers and sports the way I am. I feel that if a young lady or young man accomplishes this position they should be obligated to set a good example before their peers, instead of defaulting their position. They should be willing and ready to do whatever it takes to make the Flint schools the most prominent and competitive school district in the state."


Courtney Hawkins Jr. - Student Achievement

Courtney Hawkins, Jr. attends Beecher High School, where he carries a 3.360 grade point average.

Athletic Achievement: First team All-State in track, first team All-State in football, first team All-State All Conference in track. First team All-Conference in football, offense, defense since the ninth grade. Prep player of the week. Honored by Flint Exchange Club twice. Honored by Carl Banks and Lonny Young. MVP at several football camps.

Scholastic Achievement: Courtney has been on the honor roll each year of his school years, and ranked in the top ten in his class.

Extra Curricular Activities: Member of S.A.D.D. Serves as usher at Macedonia Baptist Church.

Courtney Hawkins is presently (1998) a very successful wide receiver with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
